Couples

Being in a relationship is a life-changing choice. This requires courage, heart and a leap into the unknown. The rewards are too numerous to list, and they also come with complex challenges that can feel disheartening. You don’t have to do this alone.

As a trained Emotionally-Focused (EFT) Couples Therapist, my role is to support couples to go beyond the story of what they are in tension about, and into the how of being inside the tension together, finding each other in new and tender ways. This requires a slowing down, an attempt to understand oneself and the other, and a re-accessing of the bond that holds the couple together.

The first step is contact me here. We can then complete a short intake form, and set-up a free 20-minute virtual consult to introduce ourselves, and determine whether to proceed to a couples therapy session.

Couples therapy sessions are 75 minutes in duration, and between 8 to 20 weekly or bi-weekly sessions are recommended for most couples. There may also be opportunity for day-long or weekend couples retreats. The cost is $235 (no tax) for a 75-minute session. Sessions are virtual or in-person, in east Toronto. Many insurance plans cover Registered Psychotherapy for couples.

I may also recommend meeting one time with each partner separately to understand some of the deeper life history and dynamics. Individual session rates would apply ($150, no tax, for 60 minutes).

Also, home practice is a common part of couples therapy, and specific practices or relationship tools may be recommended between sessions.

EFT Couples Therapy is an evidence-based approach clinically proven to significantly improve relationship outcomes. A metanalysis of research findings on EFT Couples Therapy can be found here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30605013/

Note: EFT Couples Therapy is not suitable when there is active addiction, ongoing/active affairs, or ongoing/active domestic violence. In these cases, another type of therapy may be best.
